Dear New York,

I left what I've called home for the past 30 some odd years of my life to a place I barely know, yet when I landed, it felt like I never left. You're far much colder than what I'm used to and even though I do like my temperatures warm, for you, I will handle whatever you have in store for me.

I found myself lost in you today. I took a what I thought was the right direction but eventually figured out that I strayed. I didn't panic though. Walking through your chilly neighborhoods filled with beautiful brownstones and fall leaves laden sidewalk, you're far different than what I'm used to but there was a sense of calm and ease and I slowly tried to find my direction once again.

I don't mind getting lost within you as when I do, I find little bits of myself that were lost ages ago. I adore that I'm able to take from you what I lost. Not that it was forced, more so like a gift to me. I needed that.

In 36hrs, I will have completed what I originally set out to do and say goodbye once more to a place I call home that may no longer be appealing but still, it's home. I have nothing there and everything there...the only thing that connects you two.

I think kindly of you. When I need another breath of fresh air, I'll come once again, and you won't hold it against me.

Oh New York

A few hours ago I landed in New York and it was a breath of fresh air. Cold air but fresh nonetheless. Landing, I felt like I was back at joke and there's only a few places I feel that way. Other than my actual home, Los Angeles, San Francisco would be the other location I consider home or feel really comfortable in.

I should've packed warmer. I think for what I have now, I'm good but a scarf or an extra pair of long johns and I'd be toasty and lovely.

My trip just got started and it's looking like all business and little pleasure which I'm fine with. Anything other than journalism is a vacation for me at this moment. Tomorrow is looking like a hectic day as there may be an extra gig I picked up along with the wedding I'm scheduled to do. Plus there are the little things like fulfilling the requests of friends to perform and do for them while I'm out here so we'll see how it pans out.

Currently 2am here and 11pm in LA and I oddly tired. Rest will play a big role this weekend but I'm oddly rejuvenated. It's really exciting being here and I hope to bring some of that back when I leave on Monday...

A Series Of Sleepless Nights

It's that time of year again and I'm not talking about Christmas season. This is the third consecutive sleepless night for me. There have been a lot of things running through my mind these days and I won't delve into the details and considering I'm not normally like this means one thing. December is around the corner and my mind is reacting in kind to it.

My hope is that by placing this entry, my eyes would get ever so tired that I may be able to catch some rest before any activities I have planned ahead for the day occur. There was a time when me and December were cool but those days are now nostalgic memories. I can't place an exact time frame where me and the month grew apart but it was a gradual distancing. I don't get moody during this time. Moody is not the right word. I get...disassociated. If I had a hole to crawl into, I'd do it and wait for January and the new year to show up. I've always been fond of Spring.

I was going somewhere with this but I'm afraid my plan is working as my eyes have become heavier since I started this entry. I bid you adieu.

Hello old friend. It's nice to see you again.

Where has the time gone? I've totally neglecting my blogging activity because it's been so hectic in the newsroom...my responsibilities as Photo Editor of the newspaper and my duties with the magazine. I'm literally worn out and exhausted and I'm a bit surprised as to how I'm still trucking on...

I desperately need a change of scenery. It's a good thing one is coming as I fly back out to New York next week to work on another wedding with my dear friend Pamela Masters. I'm really going to enjoy the flight out there and normally I'm a bit nervous about flying but I remember the last time I was out there, not too long ago, flying high above the clouds, trying to make out objects and landmarks and I took comfort in wondering what that little speck on the ground that would later be realized as a car was going or what the people living on the various patches of farmland were doing in this very moment. Despite the monotonous droning sound of the plane's engine or the warbled conversations going on between passengers, I found solace in my meandering thoughts not once ever thinking about deadlines and news. Typing this out made me realize how much little time I have to myself and that I cherish those fleeting moments.

This New York trip will be a quick one. Fly out of Los Angeles Friday, wedding rehearsal Saturday and some bit of sightseeing, Sunday is the wedding and I fly back to Los Angeles 7am New York time JUST to make it back on campus in time to perform my editor and journalism duties. What's funny, and sad in hindsight, is that back when this trip was in the works, I was so excited to be able to knockout the NY gig, make it back to the newsroom and knock that out too. That's quite a feat of dedication if I wasn't so stressed out and exhausted but seeing how I am now, it'd be nice to just stay in NY a little while longer. Indefinitely would be a pipe dream but a nice dream nonetheless.

8 days. If there wasn't a more pressing time for something to happen...

In Over My Head

I do believe I have taken upon myself, far too many responsibilities, to the point that I probably dug my own academic grave. A semester ago, I was a part of the Pierce College Roundup newspaper as a staff photographer and after the semester came to an end, I agreed to, and wanted to become, a part of the editorial board. I have no regrets joining the editorial board. For the most part, it's been rather fun and an enriching experience. However, I did sign up for other classes this semester with their own responsibilities. I'm taking Photo 21, which is the next class up from last semesters Photo 20 course I took, I'm also taking Journalism 101 and I'm a part of the Bull magazine. That's 4 classes of journalism work. 3 weeks into the semester and I'm seeing signs of degradation in my work overall and I don't like it. Actually, I hate it.

Being a part of the editorial board of the newspaper, my position being Photo Editor, is no easy task. Hell, being a part of ed board as an editor is no easy task. In my particular section, I have to look out for every photographer in Photo 20/21. Make sure they're going out there and documenting/photographing the stories they "promised" to do. Make sure their photos are good, as well as their photo captions. When production day rolls around, I have to press the photos and design a photo essay when possible to which, I have little experience in. It's a good thing I'm not the only Photo Editor on the ed board and without that second help, man my life would really suck.

So after trying to meet those responsibilities, and I'm trying my best, I'm missing assignments left and right in all my other journalism classes. Am I in trouble? Not yet but I'm kind of on my way there. The logical thing to do would be to cut one of my classes to ease the load but, and here's where my stubbornness comes in, I hate to quit. Here's where the paradox comes in...I want to excel. So what do I do?

My solution: go with it. I chose my classes. I'll come to accept that I won't do as great as I would like in other courses, or all the courses, but I'll take the challenges head on and in the end, it would be a valuable learning experience. A bit crazy right? I got alot of those comments during the first week of the semester. All I know is what I'm capable of and how I go about facing challenges. My determination (or stubbornness) will not allow me to fail and I'm a fairly bright guy. I've surprised myself sometimes and what I can do when the proverbial shit hits the fan. It ain't there yet but...challenge accepted.

Mondays Suck But Photography Is Awesome! (9.16.2913)

I believe I missed two photo of the week entries in a row. I apologize for that. I've been really busy with my school's newspaper that I could barely find the time to do one of these entries, as quick as it may be to make. I also believe one of the weekends was Labor day? Anyway, here's this week's submission. A beautiful piece by Jill Freeman entitled "Love Kills".

David Bowie - Helmut Newton, 1982
I recently went to the Annenberg Space For Photography this past weekend and they're showcasing the work of Helmut Newton. Awesome exhibit and I highly suggest people go check it out if you're a fan of Helmut Newton, fashion photography or just photography in general. In honor of the exhibit (which will soon be gone!), here's this photo of the week of the Thin White Duke by none other...

My Work As A Wedding Photographer

This past 4th of July weekend, while most of my friends were having fun in and out of town, I was relegated to house/dog sitting. I had little fun during that weekend but to pass the time and stay busy, I thought "HEY! I should rework some old wedding photographs and work on some new ones!" and so I did and this little busy bee was pretty darn productive! Most of these photos are older work, and was "completed" back then but have been reworked (read: re-edited; I'm known to do such things when I'm bored) and there are only a couple of (fairly) new weddings. I hope you enjoy these photographs as I have enjoyed shooting them and editing them. My labor bears fruit.

New York Travel Diary: A Compendium

When I took my trip to New York this past week, my intention was to blog my experience as well as my photos as each day went on. Unfortunately, as is life, plans change. On some of my New York nights, I was unable to put in a blog entry because I was just so tired walking around earlier on that respective day so as my visit was nearing it's end, one night I decided not to blog anymore and just blog a complete entry based on my experience in New York.

I was talking to a friend after I came back from my trip about New York and the differences and similarities between NY and LA are. I love Los Angeles. Los Angeles will always be my home. I love New York as well and now, New York will always be home also...if that makes any sense. When I first arrived, fresh off the plane, I had a jacket on because the morning I left LA was a cold one and the plan was a bit on the chilly side as well. I exited the Jet Blue terminal at JFK with my jacket on and the weather was really nice. Nice enough for a jacket...for about 5 minutes. It was then that the New York summer humidity hit me hard and I had to take off my jacket or else suffer.

The trip to my temporary home in Brooklyn/Prospect Park/Park Slope was surprisingly bad considering how close the two locations were. New York traffic is bad. I would argue that it's just as bad as LA traffic if not worse and the drivers? You think there are bad drivers in LA, wait till you experience NY drivers. There is no sense of courtesy in NY drivers. Not to say that LA drivers are courteous drivers but try changing lanes in NY traffic. Good luck with it if you're going to wait on someone giving you the space to change lanes. You really have to force that issue there. One thing that really tripped me out about NY is the rampant jay walking. Here in LA, you see a red stop light and you stay there on your side unless it turns green.

DeLancey St. Station

As far as sightseeing goes, I didn't do much of that. I went on the metro into Manhattan and the surrounding burrows but I didn't do the "tourist" kind of sightseeing as I wanted to not convey that I was a tourist. Who wants to be? I skipped out on the Empire State building or the Chrysler building. I missed out on the Brooklyn bridge (which I'll save for the next trip) and the only real touristy thing I did was see One World Trade and that was by accident as I found myself getting lost and wound up there. One interesting detail is that when I ended up at OWT, I bumped into a Turkish protest that was going on at a near by park. I can't confirm the name of the park as I didn't catch it but I'm usually around the protests that happen here in LA so running into one in NY was a bit funny to me.

I'm with you Turkey!

Turkish protest near One World Trade

The people of New York, as some may have said, may come off as rude, but I never really got to experience there. As far as I'm concerned, they're much like Angelenos, only they move at a faster pace so courtesy may not come right off the bat. Other than that, New Yorkers are really great people and I was able to speak with many of them while I was there, whether I was at the Double Windsor with the friend's I was staying with in Park Slope, or when I was out on my mini adventures on my off time. I will say one thing, New Yorkers know their style and I came across many a stylish folk while I was out there. It's a funny thing, I thought our Silverlake hipsters had something going on but these Williamsburg hipsters? They'll put our hipsters to shame on their BAD days. They are on some next level shit...

Jay-Z got his own subway line here?!

Some park that's next to (what may have been) City Hall

I will say this, New York has something going for them. As much as I wanted to soak up the entire city on my trip, I was unable to. There's just so much there and one would need a couple of months to adequately take in the city well. I only had one place I really wanted to see and that was the Hayden Planetarium at the Museum of Natural History. I did that. But I ran into a couple of beautiful things that weren't on my travel itinerary that made my trip all that much more better. New York is very park centric. I suppose the equivalent in LA is that we're either beach or shopping mall centric. A place where people come to congregate and hang out and such. I LOVE that New York is park centric! We don't have any parks here on the scale of what New York has to offer. EVERY park I saw and passed through, were literally crowded with people with lounging around or having their mid day lunch break. You NEVER see that in LA. Probably because we don't have any parks large enough, or nice enough to go do that type of thing. And I'm talking about a normal weekday and not a weekend thing. There was this park that I passed through on my last day of New York called High Line Park. Basically it's a stretch of park, located on the westside of Manhattan, founded by community residents that's built along an old railway. Before, it was just old historic, pretty much run down buildings and these guys thought about preserving the area by turning blight into a park. It's an amazing feat and the contrast between urban and this little gem of green goodness is just a wonderful experience to be had. Honestly, my words fail to better describe this gem, and I did take photos of the place, but they still have to be looked through and even then, I'd think the photos would do the place no justice. You have to literally be there to experience the place. I recommend it next time you're in Manhattan. I'll certainly be back there when I do go back.

I will leave this entry with another gem of my New York visit. Two nights before I left, I, along with the friends I was staying with, were invited to a party on a roof top somewhere in Bushwick I believe. An NY roof party if you will, one you would see in various commercials or movie scenes. Other than that, big whoop right? Other than that, I had a really good time but what made this night and this party special, was one of the bands that performed at this party. Hell, it wasn't even a band (in that the band didn't consist of established members...)! It was pretty much a jam band that consisted of 15 members or so that took turns after each other, after a certain amount of time and these guys ROCKED it. I mean literally, world turned upside down head explosion type of deal. I NEVER experienced such an experience...such a group of talented individuals performing together at any one point in time. They went of soul to funk and even went into some deep, DEEP house type sounds. And then! And then to destroy my notion of what I thought was a great experience, at that time, at some point during this long jam session, these two women walked up to one of the open mics and started singing little bits of hooks of Jill Scott and Badu etc. as the band kept jamming! I'm pretty sure these women, although they may have known some of the band members, weren't really part of it altogether. It was like "open mic?! Hell we'll sing!" type of a deal. Amazing, amazing stuff and it was the best way to cap off my trip to NY. You just had to be there. Luckily I have some video footage of that session...

It's been nearly a week since I left NY and arrived in LA and I've been having withdrawals. There was just so much I feel like I missed out on and my exit left me wanting more. Luckily, I'm scheduled to go back to NY for another gig in November! But until then, I'll be counting the days until I visit the big apple and take up as much of what I missed out on and get a better understanding and appreciation of the city.
