Denim Day is inspired by a 1997 court case in Italy involving a 45 year old driving instructor convicted of raping an 18 year old during her first driving lesson. The conviction was overturned by the Italian Supreme Court in 1998 because the victim wore tight denim jeans. The argument was, because the jeans were so tight, she had to have helped the attacker remove the jeans, thus making the act consensual. In protest of the ruling, women in the Italian Parliament protested by wearing jeans. On Denim Day, wearing jeans has become a symbol of protest and support against sexual assault. Flor Vergara, student, hangs a T-shirt with her own personal message during the Clothesline event of Denim Day. Wednesday April 24. 2013. Woodland Hills, Calif.
